Saturday 13th September arrived and with it a full complement of 16 eager ladies matched ‘highest with lowest’ in handicap rated terms. The matches started off to a brisk pace with the “Pony Tails” of Carolyn Armstrong-Smith (Petworth) and Julie Levy (Leamington) crushing the strong opposition of Lucy Davies (Hardwick) and Janet Peach (Oxford) 6-3 although there were more “game points” than the score suggested. Jo Miller (Moreton Morrell) the lowest handicap was playing with 15 year old Hannah Lucey (Prested junior) who she protected as far as Jo could but the bandit team of previous winner Sarah McGivern (Hardwick) and Elaine Wright (Prested) were to have the advantage with Sarah’s signature return ‘velcro-ed’ to the side wall winning most points. Pam Tomalin (Hardwick) and Geri Brooksbank (Hardwick) had a very hard match against Lucy Davies and Janet Peach which could easily have gone either way but Lucy and Janet won by a whisker. Candida Nicholl (Hardwick/Oratory) and Megan Hawkey (Prested Junior) were a formidable team, Megan’s serve proved tricky for all to return and Candida ran miles to return as many shots as possible – many winning the point!
The semi finals consisted of four Prested players who had come to show what we have learned from the new Mrs Fahey. Candida and Megan played Sarah and Elaine in a very close match, not a point between them but with a huge effort Elaine found great form and took the match 6-5. The other semi final was Jeannie Pigott (Bristol) and Amy Pye aged 12 (Prested Junior) against Annabel Wyatt (Prested) and Katy Weston (Hardwick). Although Katy and Annabel were 4-2 up the extra coaching of Amy to Jeannie pulled them through to win 6-5 with some play that was well in excess of their Handicap range!
So the final was Sarah and Elaine versus Jeannie and young Amy. Sarah deployed her ‘impossible’ return but Amy being fast across the court returned it early before it could die in the corner. Jeannie found her demon serve and poor Elaine was having trouble with her knee – not that you’d notice as she tore around the court. The score was 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, 5 -2 then a rally of form to 3-5 and 4-5 threatened to equal things up but eventually Jeannie and Amy won the tournament 6-4. Congratulations to them both. A very well organised tournament by Pam Tomalin, matches marked marvellously by both Marc Seigneur and Ben Matthews. Thank you also to the catering and Leamington Club itself who’s Chairman Guy Stanton is kind enough to give up his Saturday night and join the ladies at dinner. A special thank you to the sponsorship of Wineflow aka Carolyn Armstrong-Smith who helps to ensure a memorable and fun tournament.
