Leamington Spa – host to the World Championships 2015
Leamington Tennis Court Club is situated in the middle of an attractive town with a rich history: wide boulevards, Georgian and Edwardian architecture and expansive, award-winning parks provide a sophisticated backdrop to this Regency shopping paradise. Often described as “the best bits of London, all in a ten-minute walk”, Leamington town centre combines a treasure-trove of independent, specialist boutiques with all the national chains you would expect to find in a large city. There is a rich choice of restaurants and some of the country’s best spas and salons. But Leamington is not just a haven for those seeking retail therapy: there are a host of other attractions in and around the town.
To give you a flavour:
- The Cotswolds are not far away - an area scattered with small pretty towns and villages and among the lovely countryside you can find a wealth of interesting places to visit, including magnificent castles, ancient churches, glorious gardens, stately homes and historic houses. www.visitcotswolds.co.uk
- Shakespeare’s Birthplace: no visit to this area is complete without a visit to Stratford upon Avon the birthplace of our most famous bard. And also the pretty Cottage and Gardens of his wife, Anne Hathaway, just 25 minutes from Leamington. www.shakespeare.org.uk/visit-the-houses/shakespeares-birthplace.html and www.shakespeare.org.uk/visit-the-houses/anne-hathaways-cottage-amp-gardens.html.
- Charlecote Manor: home to the Lucy family since the 12th century. A superb Tudor house, beautiful gardens and landscape deer park inspired by “Capability” Brown. Just 20 minutes by car from Leamington. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/charlecote-park.
- Warwick Castle: Europe’s best-preserved medieval castle dating back to 1068: www.warwick-castle.com. The castle and grounds are well worth a visit as is the Lord Leycester Hospital which is in Warwick itself. Just a 15 minute car journey from Leamington.
And in Royal Leamington Spa itself there are always a host of attractions: the Tourist Information Centre is situated in the historic Royal Pump Rooms on The Parade (well worth a visit in itself). Here you will find people who will be only too happy to help and provide you with current information on things to see and do: www.shakespeare-country.co.uk/Leamington-Spa-Leamington-Visitor-Information-Centre. This town situated in the heart of Shakespeare Country has entertainment all year round; you can shop til-you-drop, make your taste buds tingle with the local cuisine, visit attractions and events, and really see the true culture of the area.
And of course there is Real Tennis! The Club in Leamington Spa itself is rich in history: established in 1846, it took inspiration from London clubs such as Whites, Boodles and the Reform. Its creation enabled Warwickshire gentry and the officers of Cavalry Regiments based nearby to meet, dine, drink and engage in a variety of sports and pastimes. It only opened its doors to lady members in September 2008 so the 2015 Ladies’ Real Tennis Championships will be a special occasion! http://www.leamingtonrealtennis.co.uk.
There is also the lovely hall and court at Moreton Morrell to visit and play - built in 1905 for a wealthy American Charles Garland, it boasts a rare Bickley floor – Joseph Bickley went to his grave without revealing the “recipe” for his floors! www.mmtcc.org. Few Tennis Clubs can boast such imposing ambiences in which to play as Leamington and Moreton Morrell.
