Mothers and Daughters Results and Report
11th September 2011 at Hardwick House
Tara Lumley, Penny Lumley, Sheila Macintosh, Fiona Drew
A characteristically eclectic mix of mothers, daughters, grandchildren and dogs enjoyed a most entertaining day of sunshine, food, drink, chat and - oh yes - tennis. The entry of 9 pairs included many stalwarts and some very welcome ‘new talent’, organised by Lucy Davies - with her usual charming efficiency - into 3 boxes of 3 pairs. Handicapping was tricky as (apart from Penny Lumley and Alex Garside) the mothers all had fairly high handicaps; the daughters‘ skills ranged from Karen Hird at one end to almost complete beginners at the other.
This led to some interesting results. Karen with mother Doris, for instance, failed to win their box. As did Penny and Tara Lumley, facing the heaviest handicap of the day against Sarah and Ciara Sullivan (including no chases worse than 3 and 4) though they went through as best losers. They met the Sullivans again in the semi-finals, but squeaked through this time; while in the other semi, the Garsides couldn’t conquer the points’ difference between them and Sheila Macintosh and Fiona Drew.
This gave us an epic final between Sheila and Fiona against Penny and Tara. Again the Lumleys were heavily handicapped, but Tara showed herself increasingly adept at playing a steady, consistent game. Fiona continued to cover the court with amazing ability and had Sheila climbing into the galleries to keep clear. Eventually the Lumleys prevailed and, after many years of trying, Penny was able to add another title to her impressive list!
There are many people to thank - chiefly Lucy, for all the organization, and to her and Alex for the delicious lunch. And of course the daughters on whom we mothers depend for qualification.
