| Lucy Davies very kindly organised another most successful LRTA Tennis
and Golf Day at Hardwick House and Huntercombe Golf Club on the 7th May
2003. This has been an annual event for a number of years enjoyed greatly
by all those who take part in it.
Two groups of four pairs in each played a round robin tennis competition at Hardwick in the morning. Because Lucy had matched the pairs so well we ran out of time and were unable to play the final match which would have been the winners of each group. Sarah Brownlee and Lucy Davies versus Sara Stewart and Jane Terry. However to resolve the matter a short grille competition was played. Six balls for each player and very appropriately Lucy was the only one to hit the grille! We moved on to Huntercombe for a delicious lunch followed by golf. Lucy had paired the less competent (myself being one of those!) With the lower handicap players who were most encouraging and knowledgeable of all the rules! None of us played with the same tennis partners. The Stableford competition was won by Sarah Whittaker with a score of 39 points! Very creditable! Prizes were presented after tea. The course at Huntercombe is always lovely at this time of year and we were blessed with lovely sunshine and no waterproofs were required. The bluebell woods are superb and we were made very welcome at the Club. Our one regret was that Melvyn Pignon the editor of our LRTA newsletter was unable to play owing to a ruptured achilles tendon. This is normally her one year event on the golf course where she always does remarkably well! A very big thank you to Lucy for a really fun day. Sheila Macintosh |

The next difficult stage was to find Huntercombe Golf Club, since our normal route through Checkendon was closed. Finally we all arrived and Huntercombe made us very welcome even though we were rather late. After a very good lunch we played a stableford singles competition . The weather was quite glorious and the course was wonderful with the bluebells in full bloom. As is normal at Huntercombe dogs as well as players are welcome. Sarah Whittaker had an excellent winning score of 38 points. Chris Rear 37 points second and Sue Symons 36 points third. We then had an extremely good tea and all departed in our different directions having thoroughly enjoyed our day. Lucy’s diary is full of names for next year’s fixture! Lucy Davies |
