We are currently updating the look and feel of the LRTA website to give you better access to the important information. While this is happening the updates to this website have had to be curtailed.

We will launch the new website at the begining of September (maybe a little beforehand if all goes smoothly) so please be patient, it'll be worth the wait!

Double Your Fun At Leamington

We are very pleased to be able to announce that Leamington Tennis Court Club is keen to hold ladies events and that their inaugural tournament is the Ladies Doubles. No ladies tournaments have been held at the club since it's inception in 1846 so grab this opportunity to stake your place in history!

We have recommendations for local B&Bs and hotels in the area. Click on the link to request an entry form.

Charlotte Retains Her Crown

The Queen's Club saw another spectacular tournament last weekend with the LRTA International Invitation played on one of their two real tennis courts. It was originally introduced in 2002 and is held every other year (alternating with the Ladies World Championships). The top eight available ladies played on a round robin basis which resulted in Charlotte Cornwallis meeting Jo Iddles in the final.

The LRTA would like to thank our sponsors for this prestigious event: an anonymous donor, Blenheim Alpacas, Hay Group and Pol Roger. Click here to see the results.

Leamington Lets In Ladies

Leamington Tennis Court Club, established as a gentleman's club in 1846, has up until now been a staunch bastion of testoterone and although women are occaisionally allowed to play real tennis they have not been able to become members in their own right. We're pleased to be able to report that this situation is now about to change. Read the full article in the online version of the Telegraph.

So that just leaves the Racquet and Tennis Club in New York.......

British Ladies Open Championships - final results

Moreton Morrell was the scene of some exciting tennis and one or two surprises. Both Claire Vigrass and Karen Hird proved that they are players to watch, as is Sarah Vigrass who pushed Charlotte to a 6/5 first set.

The weekend had all the usual hallmarks of the British Open but it was no real surprise that Charlotte Cornwallis retained her hold on the game winning both the Singles and, with the help of veteran Penny Lumley, the Doubles. Those fortunate enough to see the Doubles tournament probably didn't realise they were watching the end of an era - Penny has now officially retired from the game.

Dates for your Diaries

Two fixture changes to bring to your attention. The date for the LRTA Handicap Mixed Doubles, held at Seacourt on Hayling Island, has been brought forward two weeks and now is from 29th May to Sunday 1st June.

IMPORTANT! The French International Ladies Handicap (fondly known as the Paris Handicap) is changing it's venue this year and will be played at the Jeu de Paume in Bordeaux. The dates remain the same: 24th - 26th May.

Australian Women's Open

Exciting proceedings down under! Kate Leeming's cycle-marathon has obviously not impaired her tennis and there was also some fine technique on display from the younger contestants - we'll have to keep an eye on them.

We have the full results of both the Singles and Doubles tournaments plus, thanks to Juliette Lambert who was there, her match report.

Could you help sponsor the ladies game?

The LRTA runs a wide range of tournaments to suite all standards, ages and sexes; from handicap competitions for beginners and experienced players through to the British Open and, when it's our turn, the World Championships (the next one is Manchester 2007).

To do this effectively we need sponsorship. Donations from as little as £50 can really help towards the smaller events whilst £5,000 will provide facilities for major tournaments. Our sponsors can be anonymous or well publicised, it's your choice.

If you know of an organisation (or individual) who would like to help the LRTA carry on this invaluable work please contact us to discuss a contribution by emailing to sponsorship@lrta.org.uk. Thank you.

Smart Clothing for Your Matches

Some members already know about our range of white sports gear for you to wear on those important occasions. Now we've put up some photographs so that you can all see how smart the range is. All of the items are neatly embroidered with the LRTA logo in light blue.

A new addition to the range is the specially created cream tank top sporting our 21st Anniversary logo. So when that entry form specifies "all clothing on court must be predominantly white" and last year's togs are looking decidedly threadbare you know where to buy your replacements!

Check out the photos on the clothing page.

The Ladies Real Tennis Association was founded in 1981 to encourage and promote the game and to manage ladies' tournaments. Today there are over 300 members spanning all continents and there are 8 regular tournaments each year as well as numerous matches and events.

One of the ways in which the success of the LRTA can be measured is that in 1979 the first British Champion played off a handicap in the mid-30s; today Charlotte Cornwallis, the current championship holder, has a handicap of 12.
