The Singles Although the entry was small it was certainly of a high calibre. The first round matches were fiercely fought with a number of close games although even if the score didn’t always reflect it. Xanthe and Rose started off the tournament with a great game. Rose had some great retrieving but unfortunately Xanthe was just too strong and won 3 and 1. The following match between Amy and Jo came to a sudden ending with Jo having to retire 3/0 in the second set due to a back injury. The final match of the day saw Juliette playing Laura. The first set was incredibly close but eventually Laura got into her rhythm and strode away in the second set. The semi’s started with some great tennis between Xanthe and Kate, both looked a little nervous at the beginning but as they settled into the game some great tennis was witnessed by the dedans, Kate’s experience on the court eventually enabling her to win 2 and 2. The second semi saw a great display of two more up and coming talented players in Australia Amy and Laura, however Laura proved just too strong in the end for Amy, winning 0 and 2. The first set of the final was tense and extremely close with the games neck and neck until Kate managed to edge away to win it 6/3. The second set also saw some great rallies but again Kate’s experience proved too much and she closed out the set 6/1.
The Doubles The first match saw Amy and Juliette playing Kate and the heavily strapped up Jo. The first set saw some closely fought games but unfortunately Amy and Juliette were unable to convert opportunities into games. The second set was far closer with a nail biting 5 all finish but the dominant serving of Kate proved too much and they ended up the victors 6/0, 6/5. The second semi saw the established pairing of Rose and Prue up against another well known pair of Xanthe and Laura. Although Prue and Rose did some valiant retrieving making for some great rallies the youngsters were too much winning 1 and 3. The dedans were all set for a big blockbuster match in the final and weren’t disappointed but the young pairing of Laura & Xanthe were just too much for Kate and Jo, winning the match 1 and 2.
