Match Report

Ladies "Highest with Lowest" Handicap Doubles

September saw the inauguration of a new tournament and a new venue — the Ladies "Highest with Lowest" Handicap Doubles at Leamington which had recently opened its membership to lady players. It was good to see Caroline Gilmore back on court after a long absence from the game and also Susan Castley whose time on the hockey and rugby pitch showed in her fitness, but perhaps not to the same degree in her tennis!

We were given a wonderful welcome by the club professionals Kevin Sheldon and Marc Seigneur and also by Ross Clarke who prepared delicious lunches and an excellent dinner on the Saturday night.

There were seven couples in total. Players entered as individuals and were paired highest handicap with lowest handicap according to RTO singles handicaps. All the couples played each other for a single first-to-six-game set. The semi finalists qualified by the greatest number of matches won. Aldona Greenwood and Gill Goddard came out top, playing against the two Sarahs — Reston and McGivern, who had narrowly lost to them in the round robin. Aldona and Gill were the only couple to play front and back which proved very successful and they went through to the final winning 6-4. In the other semi-final Lucy Davies and Stella Heap lost 6-3 to Pam Tomalin and Mandie Holloway who proved to be just too strong a combination on the day.

In the final Aldona was in her element at the back of the court and hardly made a mistake during the whole match. It had to be said that Mandie and Pam did not play their best in the final, but they were not allowed to, and despite the handicap allowance succumbed 6-1.

Our thanks go to Sarah McGivern, Susan Castley, Sheila Macintosh and Kevin Sheldon for their superb organisation of the tournament and to the Leamington Club for a wonderful weekend. Hopefully this tournament, format and venue will be repeated next year.
