British Ladies' Handicap Tournaments 2009

The British Ladies Handicap Tournament took place at the Oratory and Hardwick House real tennis courts from 23rd to 25th October. It was an excellent weekend and most exciting— particularly on two fronts: the large entry and the number of young players who really presented a challenge to the older more experienced players who were put on their mettle by the new talent. There were also a number of high handicappers who despite having to play under their handicap level played well and with enthusiasm: we look forward to seeing them back again next year with greatly improved handicaps.

The finals of both Divisions took place at Hardwick House to a very full dedans who gave support to the players. It was a real pleasure to see Sir Julian Rose who presented the prizes and trophies to the winners.

We are also very grateful to our sponsors who helped to make this event possible: Mike Coghlan of Blenheim Alpacas and Jo McGivern of the Handpicked Collection who provided some lovely prizes for the winners.

Thank you too to both the Oratory Tennis Club and Hardwick House Real Tennis Club for allowing us to use their courts.

And many thanks also to all those who contributed to making this annual event such a success: the tournament committee, the caterers, the organisers of the dinner, the local ladies who provided accommodation and the markers — including the local gentlemen who helped out so willingly at Hardwick!

  Division One

‘The young shall faint from exhaustion’ was the evensong text: a prediction coming true for one of the likely contenders for the Div 1 crown, fifteen year old Tara Lumley, (daughter of long-time World Champion Penny). She turned up for the quarter finals with a temperature and headache. So would she be able to continue the blistering form that had impressed in the round robins, or would biblical prophecy prevail?

In the quarters, no problem for Tara, fortified by a big box of Quality Street as she powered Linda Sheraton Davies off court 6-1. The other Linda, Linda Fairbrother, had an easier time, forcing errors from the other teenager in the Division, Sian Medlow, and going through 6-4. The other two quarters were closer affairs, both going all the way to the wire. Gabrielle Smart forged ahead against Katie Leppard to lead 5-3, but Katie railroaded back to level the score, and went through with a force to the dedans on match point to win 6-5. Clare Weatherill and Mandie Holloway level pegged it to also reach 5 all, 40 all, till Mandie over-egged a high shot that brushed the bandeau and Clare went through 6-5.

In the first semi, Linda Fairbrother faced Katie Leppard, a relative newcomer to the game. After a shaky start against a focussed Linda, Katie was down 3-1. But she’d obviously been learning fast during the tournament, and helped by a purple patch of unreturnable railroads, forged ahead to 5-3. A tense exchange of long rests and short chases followed, but Katie scrambled to victory 6-4.

In Clare and Tara’s match, Tara scrambled superbly, dispatching the ball with cut into distant corners. Clare played her best, with perfect penetration and serving, to win a game at 3-0 down, but was allowed no more, as Tara added forces to the grille and dedans to her previous killer shots. Tara through, 6-1.

In the final, Tara against Katie. Would illness and lack of Quality Street at Hardwick finally affect Tara’s game? Could Katie hang in to show again her status as the Comeback Kid?

For a few minutes, it seemed that the young might indeed finally faint with exhaustion. A nervy start from Tara led to rather more unforced errors than we’d seen previously. But her weight of shot remained strong enough to dominate her opponent, though Katie gave trouble when her serve was firing. At 4-2 to Tara. Katie had a good chance of taking the next game to perhaps edge back into contention. But Tara was having none of it, and used aggressive cut into the corners to make it 5-2. And then take the match 6-2 with an excellent final serve. The young triumphed.

In the doubles final, they were back again: Sian and Tara versus the longstanding partnership of Pam Tomalin and Chantelle Harding: fresh talent versus two of the canniest doubles players around.

Pam and Chantelle were steady as granite — serving well and using side walls to fox their opponents, especially Sian who found it hard to cope with strong balls coming at her from unfamiliar angles. Just a few uncharacteristic errors from Pam and Chantelle when faced with wickedly spinning balls kept the youngsters in the match. But at 3-2, the older pair’s experience started to tell: never out of position ,and using strong volleys to superb effect to take the sting off Tara’s ground strokes. By 5-2 in their favour, they were on song with both ground strokes and serves. With apparent ease, Pam and Chantelle sealed the match at 6-2.

Division Two

Division 2 rounds and knockouts were held under healthy competition at Hardwick House this year. Each grouping showed strong competition between players. It was good to see such a high number of higher handicappers as well as seeing some of the junior ladies joining in as well. There was a good selection of players from all over the UK in there giving their all. This year saw in both divisions their share of younger players presenting their youthful energy on the court — testing the ability and cunning of those with a few more years under their belt.

Not to be daunted by this — each group saw players present plenty of moments of awe and with surprise by the onlookers on “how did they get that back!?!”. And that was for all levels of experience. There was no lack of determination and this fed through to the knockouts after the successful round robins providing players with plenty of opportunity to play the game. By the end of Saturday the final players left ready to go through to a testing final were Jess Garside and Gill Goddard.

Sunday morning saw the battle lines drawn for the doubles knockout and again plenty of “ooh and aahs” as players demonstrated their tenacity, the occasional bit of luck but no-one ever giving up, providing strong play to the end! After some challenging games — the teams that made it to the finals again presented a battle of the ages with Jess Garside and Lucinda Piggott taking on Kim Walker and Katy Weston who had some local knowledge on their side!

By lunchtime Hardwick was humming with the arrival of the Division One finalists and as they say — let battle commence — with each Final represented by junior ladies and ladies of not such junior years.

The finals required the players to test their skill, present athletic ability and a lot of sheer determination to get to the winning point. The audience was provided a treat with all the final games providing some great tennis. In the Division 2 singles, Jess gave a huge challenge to Gill who worked hard to win 6-4 and in the doubles, Jess and her partner Lucinda prevailed against Kim and Katy winning 6-4.
